We'll decide where to go when we meet. These rides tend to be for our more serious riders who wish to push themselves a little bit harder in regards to speed and terrain. Typically about 3 hours duration. Bring snacks.

Acknowledgment of VCAC Policies and Procedures
By attending this ride, I declare that I have read, understood and agree to the following ride procedures and policies:
• VCAC is responsible for providing a ride route that a reasonably medically fit and competent rider can safely ride. Responsibility to safely and competently ride the route is solely the responsibility of each participant, including responsibility for observing and adapting to all traffic conditions, signage and surface conditions, observance of all traffic laws, and riding carefully and defensively.
• VCAC reserves the right to change, cancel, or postpone a ride or venue, but in so doing will endeavor to inform its members of the change.
• Participants are expected to be medically fit. If you have recently suffered an illness, injury, or impairment, or is pregnant or disabled in any way, you are expected to have consulted a physician prior to participating in a VCAC ride. If you have any medical condition that could affect your ability to ride and complete a VCAC ride, such as a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy, shortness of breath, arm, leg or knee injuries, restricted vision or hearing, please advise the ride leader prior to registering for the ride.
• Participants must wear an approved bicycle helmet and must not wear or use headphones or earphones when participating in any VCAC ride.
• VCAC has complete authority for the ride, including the right to refuse any participant. VCAC officials including its directors, ride leaders, marshals and sweeps have discretion to select a recommended route. Road conditions and signage may have changed since the ride was planned and the recommended route does not guarantee safe riding or security from theft or assault. You are free to choose another route if you wish, but if you do, you will be riding independently, without supervision or observation and no one is responsible for warning you of common or special hazards. VCAC reserves the right to remove any rider who is deemed to be endangering him or herself or others, or is riding illegally as defined by traffic law, or whose conduct or behavior detracts from the enjoyment of other ride participants.
• Some VCAC rides include stops at venues where alcohol may be available, during or after the ride. It is the participant’s responsibility to never become impaired by alcohol during the ride and to remain fit and able to safely cycle. VCAC does not allow intoxication and should a participant become intoxicated in violation of law, the participant is expressly doing so at their own risk and VCAC assumes no liabilityfor any civil or criminal violation or damages that may be assessed against a participant as a result.
• VCAC accepts no responsibility where a participant accepts assistance in attempting a roadside bike repair from another participant or ride official.
• VCAC accepts no responsibility where a rider accepts emergency first aid assistance from another participant or ride official.
• VCAC may use, reuse, reproduce, publish, or republish any photographs, motion pictures, recordings, or any other record of participation in a VCAC ride or event without payment.
Participants are expected to observe the following group riding procedures:
• When you hear the rider leader's bell ringing repeatedly, give the ride leader your full attention - some important information is about to be imparted. In return for your attention, ride leaders will keep their speeches concise and infrequent.
• Repeat any signals performed by the person in front of you for the person behind you. E.g. Left Turn, Right Turn, Stopping, Hazard, Pedestrians on the trail.
• When turning at an intersection, all riders should signal in order to let cars know that all of us are turning.
• Turn your head to the side and shout "stopping" so that the person behind can hear you if you need to stop unexpectedly or if the person in front of you indicates the group is stopping.
• Always stay behind the ride leader and in front of the sweep. This is the only way we can know that we have not lost anyone.
• It is okay to pass the leader on a hill, so that you don't lose your momentum, but if you do, stop at the top of the hill and resume your place behind the leader.
• Any time you are overtaking members of the ride group (or anyone else for that matter) announce yourself by shouting “passing on your left” and ringing your bell if you have one - you don’t want to cause a crash if the rider in front of you suddenly moves to the left.
• When you stop for any reason, move your bike (and yourself) completely off the road or trail.
• When necessary, the front of the ride will stop on the other side of an intersection to wait for everyone to safely get through the light or stop sign. Do not ever compromise safety by riding through a red light, or a stop sign without looking. Just because the rider in front thinks it is safe to go through an intersection does not mean it is safe for you. Make your own decision to cross intersections - DO NOT call out to others “it’s safe to go” or "clear".
• When necessary, a “pointer” will be placed to indicate any turns off the current road. If we get stretched out and you don’t see any riders in front of you, just keep going on the current road until you see the pointer indicating a turn.
• Always ride single file on busy roads.
• Always leave a safe stopping distance between you and the rider in front of you. This will vary depending on terrain, hilliness, speed, weather, traffic...
• Leave a gap of 1.5 meters (5 feet) when passing parked cars to avoid getting doored.
• Always do a shoulder check and signal when moving laterally - someone may be overtaking you.
• If you would like to stop for any reason (add or remove clothing, water break, rest stop, bike problems, take a picture, pick some blackberries...) ask the person in front or behind you to pass your request up to the ride leader or back to the sweep.
• If you are leaving the ride prematurely, let the leader or sweep know or we may think you are lost and spend time looking or waiting for you.

You are covered on your first ride with us as a guest, but for subsequent rides, you must join the VCAC.
