The Canadian Club of Vancouver is kicking off the New Year and Canada's 150th Anniversary with its first luncheon featuring Professor Santa Ono, 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia. Professor Ono will address UBC's Second Century: From Excellence to Eminence, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, Terminal City Club.
As a professor of medicine and biology, Professor Ono's research encompasses the immune system, eye inflammation and age-related macular degeneration – a leading cause of blindness. Before coming to UBC, Professor Ono was the president of the University of Cincinnati, becoming its first Asian-American president. He was recently recognized by the American Council on Education with an award that honours individuals who have demonstrated leadership and commitment on a national level to the advancement of racial and ethnic minorities in higher education. Inside Higher Education also named him America's most notable university president in 2015.
