READING PATRICK O’BRIAN, H.M.S. SURPRISE In our third four-week session we will take an unusual sprint through O’Brian’s third book in the 20-book series of historic novels that began with MASTER AND COMMANDER.
You are invited to join an enthusiastic group. Though we move along purposefully, we stop often to delve into the characters, the scenes, the history and to marvel at O’Brian’s literary genius.
Please call the library to register and please leave your email address so Harris Gruber, the instructor can contact you.
The time frame is the early 1800’s. The story is about the lives of British sailors in the time of Napoleon and the War of 1812. We travel around the world with our wonderful characters, share their lives and loves, magnificent sailing scenes, sea battle and a world-wide profusion of the natural sciences that would have impressed Charles Darwin and Sir Joseph Banks.
Some readers, who knew nothing of these works, have been at it since we began these forays four years ago. Others have read them over and over, but they are too much fun to read alone.
To join us, you will need to buy or borrow an early W.W. Norton American edition of H.M.S SURPRISE, so that we may be on the same page together (379 pages, hardcover or paperback).
The fun begins at 1:00 PM on Wednesday January 11th, at the Tiverton Library. Each session is three hours. Happy to answer any questions. Your Facilitator: Harris Gruber is happy to answer any questions.
On March 15th, we begin our eighth semester (eight Wednesdays) at Second Half/Lifelong Learning Institute in Fall River, this semester, with books 15 and 16, THE TRUELOVE and THE WINE DARK SEA.
