Join us in the front lobby on Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. as we cut a cake with Helen Richards, Ralph’s sister and Charleston VAMC volunteer, in celebration of our local hero’s birthday.
We will celebrate what would have been the 68th birthday of Ralph Henry Johnson, our medical center's namesake. On his birthday, we remember his heroic sacrifice and the principled character that defines his life and legacy. In 1967, on a hill overlooking the Quan Duc Valley, Johnson valiantly gave his life to save the lives of his comrades by using his own body to absorb the impact of a grenade blast. For his actions, Pfc. Johnson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor—displayed in the front lobby of our medical center.
We will always honor Johnson for the heroic act that cost him his life, and remember his sacrifice as we serve each Veteran that walks through the doors of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. His remarkable legacy lives on each day as we work to provide the highest quality health care to more than 70,000 men and women who have served this country. We are dedicated to Ralph's mission of putting others first as we "care for him who shall have borne the battle."
